Young Barbadians will have an opportunity this summer to learn about the relationship between productivity and personal effectiveness in order to enable them to apply productivity concepts at an individual and organisational level.

The Productivity Council will host four workshops on Preparation for the World of Work for students of secondary and tertiary institutions, new entrants to the workplace and youth group members who are between the ages of 15 and 25.

The two-day training sessions will be held on July 15 and 16; July 22 and 23; August 12 and 13; and August 19 and 20 at The Productivity Council, 3rd Floor, Baobab Tower, Warrens, St. Michael. Persons interested in participating should immediately call Coordinator of the Programme, Roseann Morris, at 626-9416.

Participants will be exposed to such topics as How do I Prepare for the World of Work, How Personal Attributes Contribute to Job Performance, and On the Job Functions. They will also be taught the do???s and don???ts of r??sum?? and cover-letter preparation, and receive valuable job interview tips.

Mrs. Morris said the objective of the programme was to help students transition smoothly from school to the work environment. ???There are rules and regulations at schools which they must follow, and we want them to understand that there are structures and polices that they must follow in the workplace. Our programme will also sensitise them about how they should dress and behave on the job,??? she stated.

Now in its sixth year, the current programme has been tweaked to ensure that participants receive maximum benefits from it. ???We have modified the training because we realised the half-day sessions did not have the adequate amount of time to reinforce the concepts we were exposing them to.

???Hence, we decided to lengthen the sessions to prepare the participants thoroughly for the interviewing process. More importantly, they will have the opportunity to be interviewed by human resource practitioners, where their weaknesses and strengths will be highlighted, thus preparing them to master the interviewing process,??? Mrs. Morris explained.
