The issue of elder abuse and bringing awareness about it will be the focus of a rally and march – two separate events – to be held here in observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

On that day, the rally will be held at National Heroes’ Square from 9:30 a.m. It is expected that there will be presentations from the Ministers of Health and Social Care, and a representative from the Canadian High Commission, as well as cultural presentations from schools across the island. This country’s oldest citizen, James Sisnett, who is 109 years old, will participate in the ribbon cutting.

According to an official of the National Planning Committee for Older Persons’ Activities, "the rally is a major initiative intended to develop a national awareness of elder abuse and to advocate for legislation against this scourge. It also aims to provide more support for caregivers."

The march will take place on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the General Post Office at Cheapside and ending at Independence Square. Persons should assemble by 8:00 a.m. Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Esther Byer Suckoo is expected to address participants.??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
