World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be observed on Saturday, June 15. (FP)

As Barbados prepares to join countries around the globe in celebrating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Saturday, June 15, the National Assistance Board is planning a number of activities to mark the day.

This Sunday, June 9, a church service at the Selah Methodist Church, Crab Hill, St. Lucy, beginning at 9:00 a.m., will commence a week of activities scheduled to commemorate the day. Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steve Blackett, will deliver remarks at the service.

On Saturday, June 15, there will be a community outreach event at the Speightstown Esplanade, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., designed to sensitise the public on the issue of elder abuse. There will be performances by students from the schools in St. Peter, presentations by some older members of the community and a display of information on a variety of issues affecting older persons.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day aims to encourage communities to recognise the occurrence of elderly abuse within their society, and to propel the creation of policies that foster respect for elders while providing them with tools to continue to be productive citizens.
