In celebration of World Food Day 2010, the Ministry of Agriculture will host a 5-kilometre walk, breakfast and food drive this Saturday, October 16, starting at 6:00 a.m.

The walk will start and finish at the Bay Street Esplanade, St. Michael.

Registration, which continues until Friday, October 15, is free and interested persons are asked to do so by visiting the Ministry’s headquarters at Graeme Hall, Christ Church or the Animal Nutrition Unit, the Pine, St. Michael.

No registration will be accepted on the morning of the event. Check in time will be from 5:00 to 5:50 a.m.

The first 100 registered walkers to check in will receive a commemorative T-shirt and there will be participation prizes for each registered walker. Breakfast will be provided at the finish for participants.

The walk will travel from the Bay Street Esplanade to Bush Hill, Dalkieth Road, Brittons Hill, Culloden Road, Belleville, Belmont Road, Martindale’s Road, Jemmotts Lane and finish at Bay Street.

Participants in the 5k walk and members of the public are also asked to bring canned and non-perishable food items for donation to the needy, as the Ministry hosts a food drive following the walk. Persons in the agricultural sector can also pledge donations of food items.

The drive will aid the Salvation Army in their feeding programmes, and officers will be at Bay Street to assist and receive donations.

Persons can also pledge their support by joining the World Food Day Committee in its efforts to feed the hungry, or sign the petition to end hunger at http://www.1billionhungry.org/. The food drive will run from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
