Barbados will join the rest of the globe in celebrating World Oceans Day, tomorrow, Wednesday, June 8, under the theme: Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet.

Individuals and organisations across the globe are expected to take action for the prevention of plastic pollution in the ocean.

Officials at the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) are encouraging residents to be more conscious of their methods for garbage disposal, and to recycle wherever possible.

In addition, the CZMU, in collaboration with the Caribbean Youth Environment Network Barbados chapter, will host the first of a series of underwater cleanups around the island on Saturday, June 11, beginning at 7:00 a.m.

However, scuba divers and other interested persons are asked to meet at the Folkestone Park and Marine Reserve, Holetown, St. James, from 6:30 a.m.

World Oceans Day started with the Ocean Project in 2002, and was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008.
