The Barbados Postal Service (BPS) will join other postal organisations worldwide to commemorate World Post Day on Sunday, October 9.

According to an official: "Celebrations for World Post Day serve to highlight the critical role the post plays in the worldwide communications network; so around the world the postal service takes the opportunity to recognise the contribution of its employees. Also, it serves to increase awareness about the aims and activities of the Universal Postal Union, which is on a mission to develop social, cultural and commercial communication between people through the efficient operation of the postal service."

To mark this occasion, the BPS will celebrate with divine worship at the St. Leonard’s Anglican Church, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in which the Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite, will make brief remarks.

It will be followed by brunch at the General Post Office (GPO), Cheapside, where the Minister will present the prizes from the Universal Postal Union to the national letter-writing winner, who also won the 40th International Letter Writing Competition for Young People.

The following day, Monday, October 10, the national winners in the 2011 Letter Writing Competition will be honoured during a presentation ceremony in the GPO’s Conference Room, ??on the on the Third Floor, starting at 3:30 p.m.?? The national winner will also give remarks about her entry.
