Highlighting tourism’s role in a brighter energy future will come into focus as the world celebrates World Tourism Day (WTD) on September 27.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) will host two online activities leading up to WTD 2012 to encourage worldwide participation in and greater understanding of this year’s theme, Tourism and Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development.

The World Tourism Day Photo Competition, which is open to persons of all ages, requires submissions which "capture how the tourism sector is implementing new ideas to increase energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy in its operations, or photos showing how tourism is bringing modern and clean energy to local communities".?? The deadline for entries is Friday, August 31, with a grand prize of a seven-day trip for two to Spain.

In addition, the UNWTO’s Hotel Energy Solutions project will feature an online Energy School, to assist facilities in addressing climate change, energy efficiency and renewable energy issues in an effort to create more sustainable accommodation.

Additional information on the Photo Competition and Energy School may be obtained by visiting http://wtd.unwto.org/en/homewtd2012.
