Tourism should be seen, not only as a contributor to world economies, but as an industry which strengthens our sense of humanity. This observation was made by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, in his World Tourism Day Message for 2011.

With Tourism – Linking Cultures serving as the this year’s theme, the Secretary-General emphasized that the industry and UNWTO had multiple roles to play and responsibilities and standards to uphold: "Promoting and developing tourism with a view to contributing to economic development, international understanding, peace, prosperity, and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all is at the heart of UNWTO’s mandate…

"…Tourism growth brings serious responsibilities to minimize any potentially negative impacts on the cultural assets and heritage of mankind. The Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, a set of universal values, principles and standards, guides tourism’s development, so that it is sustainable, ethical and responsible," Mr. Rifai noted.

World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on September 27.?? Information on World Tourism Day, may be obtained by visiting the UNWTO website at http://www.unwto.org/.
