The inaugural Worldskills Barbados competition will be staged in Barbados this week, with 29 participants showing off their skills to the rest of the island and the world.

Students from the Barbados Vocational Training Board (BVTB), the Barbados Community College (BCC) and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) will face off in the categories: Fashion Technology, Beauty Therapy, Automotive Technology and Hairdressing on Wednesday, March 7, and Thursday, March 8, at the SJPP in Wildey, St. Michael.

From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, students will take part in various challenges in front of a panel of judges and a live audience.??

On Friday, March 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. students participating in the category of Culinary Arts will showcase their skills at the PomMarine Hotel, Hastings, Christ Church. Competitors will be drawn from the BCC and the SJPP.

In the hairdressing category, the ladies of the SJPP and BVTB are expected to create a number of fashionable and innovative hairstyles and cuts for both men and women.

Garment construction will be the order of the day for the contestants partaking in the Fashion Technology segment.?? It is anticipated that the fashion designers will have to create ???eye-catching’ clothing and also produce pieces that can be worn by live models.?? Students from BVTB, the BCC and SJPP will be competing for the top spot.

The SJPP is the only institution represented in the Beauty Therapy category.?? The five trainee beauty therapists will perform facials, nail technology, massages and make-up among other challenges.

Only males from the BVTB and the SJPP will be competing in the Automotive Technology category.?? They will be required to perform a number of mechanical procedures over the two-day competition.

Admission is free and the public is invited to support the competitors as well as browse exhibits featuring young business owners from the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme.?? There will also be career showcases and technical and vocational skill displays.

The Worldskills Barbados competition is organised by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council. It is based on Worldskills International, a global skills Olympics, which is held every two years.?? Barbados is the second English-speaking country to become a member of Worldskills International.
