In an effort to educate and expose students and staff to concepts of health and healthy living, The St. Michael School has declared this school year as The Year of Health.

The health initiative, dubbed NEWSTART (Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunshine, Trust in Divine Power, Air, Rest, Temperance), will incorporate a number of health-promotion activities.

It begins with an official launch on Monday, February 29, at 9:30 a.m. in the school’s auditorium at Martindales Road, St. Michael.??Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones will launch the Health Initiative while Minister of Health, John Boyce will deliver brief remarks.

Following the launch, there will be a Visit to homes of needy and elderly to deliver healthy hampers, on Monday, March 14, and a series of 10-minute health presentations at full assembly on Monday mornings. These will occur on March 7, 14, 21; April 11 and 25, at 8.10 a.m. daily.

Walk For a Cause has been planned for Tuesday, March 22. It will see the school partnering with several organisations in the fight against substance abuse, cancer, juvenile diabetes, child abuse, lupus, domestic violence, heart and stroke problems and neglect of the elderly.??The hour-long walk begins at the school, at 9:00 a.m.

Walkers will then join staff and students for a Health Expo at 11.00 a.m. that will comprise health checks, food demonstrations and displays of health products. There will also be literature distribution, health talks, line dancing and other physical activities. Healthy food will be on sale.
