Young people in Barbados have been lauded for their outstanding work with the Haiti Relief efforts.

Minister of Youth, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, said they were working "around the clock" at Kensington Oval; the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus; and various supermarkets across the island to raise money and collect items for earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

"We have been lamenting the demise of volunteerism, but it is heartening to see that at the crucial times when our neighbours need us, our young people are rising to the occasion," Dr. Byer Suckoo stated.

On Tuesday, January 12, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 struck the already impoverished Caribbean country, killing well over 100,000 people, leaving thousands homeless and Haiti in ruins. Last Wednesday, a 6.1 aftershock was recorded, causing further distress to the nation’s people.

Government and corporate Barbados have rolled out several initiatives to raise funds and collect medical supplies, food items and clothing to send to Haiti.
