A number of young Barbadians have been encouraged to spend their early years grasping the rudiments of entrepreneurship, since their future could be more about their business skills, than "finding a job".

Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Stephen Lashley, expressed this view, while suggesting that the Barbados Public Workers’ Cooperative Credit Union (BPWCCU) could explore the possibility of partnering with the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme.

His comments were made last Friday at the closing ceremony of a four-day Thrift Club Easter Seminar on Public Speaking at the Credit Union’s Belmont Road headquarters.

Mr. Lashley told the 38 teenagers that as they made this important transition in their lives, the ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with their peers, their parents, teachers and older persons would be critical to their development. "It will allow you to share new ideas, transfer knowledge, learn new skills, concepts and act as a conduit for the dissemination of information in this era, now commonly known as the information age.

"Effective communication begins with you and your commitment to learn the necessary skills, methods and purposes of human communication; and having done so, putting that knowledge into practice with each opportunity that is presented to you," he explained.

Minister Lashley urged the young people to internalise the information their instructors shared with them and use it at every chance. He listed some effective communicators as National Hero, the Right Excellent Errol Barrow; civil rights champion, Dr. Martin Luther King; and US President, Barack Obama. "They grasped and mastered the art of effective communication and used it to the fullest extent to achieve personal, organisational and national goals," he opined.
