Government is giving young people an opportunity to air their views on crime and violence in the island.

As part of its continuing mandate to educate the youth and to give them a voice in this country’s development, the National Youth Forum will stage a General Meeting on Saturday, October 30, at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael. ??It gets under way from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The multi-faceted approach will see several key agencies such as the Royal Barbados Police Force, along with the Ministries of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, the Probation Department and ??the National Youth Service interfacing with the National Youth Forum in addressing the issue of crime and violence in Barbados. Minister of Family, Culture, Sports, and Youth, Stephen Lashley, will also give an overview of the Draft National Youth Policy and answer any questions posed.

According to Minister Lashley, "out of this we expect to finalise a series of interventions, including employment projects to reverse the trend towards lawlessness, deviance and crime among some of the island’s youth".

The symposium will be another avenue for young persons between 15 and 29 to present their views about unlawful activity. They will also address its causes, what can be done to address this issue and what young people are prepared to do to prevent crime.

The National Youth Forum is designed to give young men and women an opportunity to share ideas on how best to improve their lives and how to actively contribute to national development.?? It is one of Government’s key policy initiatives and is aimed at ensuring that all Barbadian youth are involved and engaged in the conceptualisation, development and implementation of the National Youth Policy.

This follows the creation of the National Youth Forum on July 4. For further information on the Forum visit the website http://www.nationalyouthforum.orf/ or telephone the Ministry of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth at 430-2813. clashley@barbados.gov.bb
