Students of the Daryll Jordan Secondary School will have an opportunity to learn more about their CARICOM neighbours when that institution hosts a cultural extravaganza to commemorate CARICOM Day, on Tuesday, July 4.

The event will be held on the grounds of the school at Trents, St. Lucy, starting at 10:00 a.m. There will be displays of food, drink, music, games, dress, and information boards during the day.

Co-organiser and teacher, Kimberley Skeete, explained that the extravaganza is an effort to make students more “culturally aware”, and learn as much as they can about their neighbours.

“Over the years, our school population has become quite diverse with the inclusion of several students and staff members from countries in the Caribbean region. We would wish our students to learn about the things that make each CARICOM nation unique but we also want to emphasise those things that make us one community,” Mrs. Skeete said.

July 4 is commemorated annually as CARICOM Day. It was on this day in 1973 that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was established through the Treaty of Chaguaramas.

This year will be the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of CARICOM, and celebrations will be held under the theme: 50 Years Strong: A Solid Foundation to Build on.
