Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones??(FP)??

Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones will on Monday, January 14, at 9:30 a.m. get a first-hand look at work on the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) Expansion Annex.

The walkthrough, which will serve to update the Minister and senior officials will be led by Director of the Higher Education Development Unit (HEDU), Dr. Patrick Rowe; SJPP’s Principal, Hector Belle and Chairman of the Board of Management of the SJPP, Desmond Browne.??

The SJPP’s Annex Project, which is being coordinated by the HEDU, emerged from the need to provide more teaching space at the Polytechnic. The Ministry of Housing and Lands transferred approximately 2.5 acres to the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development under the care of the SJPP.

This increase of land space has allowed for the creation of the temporary infrastructural development that is expected to bring with it a state-of-the-art training facility for students pursuing various programmes in aesthetics, electrical installation and agricultural studies.

It is also hoped that the SJPP’s curriculum will expand to support alternative energy use for instance providing training to students in renewable energy. There will also be increased staff amenities.

Several green initiatives will be reflected in the project. These include the underground capture of water for irrigation, wind and solar energy-based street lights, photovoltaic external lights attached to the buildings and a model recycling programme within the Annex.

The Project is expected to be handed over to the SJPP on April 1, the start of the next financial year.
