Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith, has reiterated that Government is committed to ensuring that young people succeed.

Mr. Griffith was delivering remarks at the launch of the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme’s (YES) Entrepreneurial Development Training Programme for 50 young entrepreneurs at Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael, last Saturday.

In his address to the new cohort, Minister Griffith praised the participants for ignoring pessimistic views and embracing the opportunity, and said they would be provided with the necessary resources and guidance for them to thrive. He also encouraged them to love themselves and to believe in their potential.

“Government will not allow you to fail. It is important that you believe … in what you are doing, because that is the starting point. If it is a case where you believe in self, then everything will come after. I’ve mentioned at a couple of my events the concept of FLY, first love yourself. And if you do that, I believe that your business will grow,” he stated.

The Minister also spoke about the introduction of “weighted certification” upon completion of the programme, which will enhance the participants’ credentials and marketability.

“We’re working with The University of the West Indies to make sure that you may be the ones to receive them … and I’m planning to make some calls to ensure that you are the ones that are involved,” he stated.

He underscored the importance of viewing challenges as opportunities to pivot and innovate, encouraging participants to learn from failures and continuously strive for growth.

Over the next 13 weeks, the participants will receive training from the YES team and various facilitators. The curriculum includes topics such as Personal Image Management, Using Technology in Business, Business Planning, and Financial Management.

The programme, which will be conducted both in-person and online, aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their entrepreneurial endeavours. It also offers financial support through a loan of $5,000 from the Barbados Trust Fund Limited, with opportunities for additional funding as the businesses grow.

The Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme is committed to expanding its impact regionally, encouraging participants to think beyond local markets and aim for broader recognition.
