The Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development is actively looking for avenues to place more members of the disabled community into the workforce.
Labour Minister, Senator Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, gave this undertaking today while addressing the graduation and awards ceremony for students of the Albert Cecil Graham Development Centre, in the Donald Henry Auditorium, Bethel Methodist Church.
She disclosed that the Ministry would be exploring how they could be placed by utilising the services of the National Employment Bureau or the soon-to-be created Barbados Employment Career Counselling Services.
“These special students can do a task assigned…When you give them a message, they can repeat it word for word. As we prepare ourselves, let us not limit our students…embrace your children,” she urged.
She noted that Barbados had made significant strides in embracing the disabled community and was particularly pleased that accessibility to public spaces continued to be part of the conversation for a greater push towards acceptance of the disabled.
During the ceremony, patrons were treated to the talents of the students as they performed musical selections, poetry and song, much to the delight of the appreciative audience.
A number of prizes were presented to the students from the Day Care Education and Workshop Units. The most outstanding student in the Day Care Unit was Chad Giddings; while Anastasia Pollard and Brandon Morris received the most outstanding student awards in the Education and Workshop Units, respectively.
