Ibriel Holder was adjudged the winner of the inaugural Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship’s Smart Energy Trivia Tournament.
The 19-year-old electrical engineering student of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology received an iPad Air and $500 in cash for the primary or secondary school of her choice.
Ibriel chose her old primary school, Welches Primary, in St. Thomas, to receive the cash prize, which was presented to Principal Greig Walters, during a presentation ceremony at the school, recently.
During the event, Miss Holder urged Principal Walters to put the funds to good use, while the school’s Science Coordinator, Mona Jones, thanked the former head girl for her kind gesture.
Meanwhile, Project Manager for the Public Sector Smart Energy Programme in the Ministry, Keisha Reid, shared the reason for the project.
“We believe it is extremely important to share information about the types of renewable energy that we want to promote in Barbados, and the actions that all the energy champions out there can do to help us reach our goals. This is the rationale for us creating this modern digital space, which we hope our youth will enjoy and get involved with,” she stated.
The second place winner was Miranda Douglas, who won a $200 shopping voucher, while Simone Mayers placed third and received a $150 shopping voucher.
The Smart Energy Tournament was held on Saturday, March 13, and 40 participants joined the Facebook live event and showcased their knowledge about the energy sector.
Designed for young Barbadians, it utilised a digital quiz to share energy efficiency tips, renewable energy data and techniques to help the country reach its 2030 goal of being 100 per cent renewable.
The tournament is part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to promote and create awareness of the Barbados National Energy Policy.
