A close-out workshop to give an update of Barbados’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will come off tomorrow, Wednesday, March 16, at the Hilton Barbados Resort, Needham’s Point, St. Michael, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Minister of the Environment and National Beautification, Adrian Forde, will deliver remarks during the workshop.
The NDC is a national plan submitted by Parties to the Paris Agreement of the UNFCCC, and embody efforts by countries to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the adverse impacts of global climate change.
The 2021 update of Barbados’ 2015 NDC was submitted to the UNFCCC on July 31, 2021, and places Barbados on a path towards a climate change resilient island economy with deep emissions reductions aligned with the 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature increase goal of the Paris Agreement.
Among the main features of the 2021 update is the need to ensure a protected environment, a stable society and sustainable and resilient economy.
In addition, it was noted that the Government of Barbados has set the aspirational goal to achieve a fossil fuel-free economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors to as close to zero as possible by 2030.
