Members of the public are encouraged to attend the Constitutional Reform Commission’s public lecture on Friday, December 9, at the Henry Fraser Lecture Theatre, The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Head of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance’s (International IDEA) Constitution-Building Programme, Sumit Bisarya, will deliver the lecture. Its theme is: Constitution Making in the 21st Century – Trends and Challenges.

Mr. Bisarya emphasised the importance of the lecture, and urged the public to attend and share their views.

“I hope that we will be able to engage in a good discussion about what is happening around the world in constitution reform. Issues like climate change or the participation of people in politics – things that were not around when the Barbados Constitution was written, [and] things that were not so prevalent when Barbados did a constitutional review.

“We want to highlight some of these trends, how other countries are dealing with them and learn from the people in the audience how they see the Barbados Constitution could tackle some of the issues,” he explained.

Mr. Bisarya is in Barbados to also provide professional development assistance to the Constitutional Reform Commission and to engage with civil society organisations.
