The success of phase one of the Ohana “Gloves Over Guns” Project is an indication of the “tremendous potential” of sports-based programmes in creating positive change.

This view was expressed recently by Principal Youth Development Officer in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Andrea Titus, as she delivered remarks at the launch of the second phase of the Ohana “Gloves Over Guns” Project, at the Chesterfield Brewster Youth Empowerment Centre, at Silver Hill, Christ Church.

Ms. Titus expressed optimism that the second phase would make an even greater impact, as she shared that the Youth Commissioners and Community Development Officers in the Ministry would assist with the recruitment process and identify individuals who could benefit from the “life-changing experience”.

“Furthermore, this project presents an excellent opportunity for all stakeholders to align their brands with the promotion of peace, excellence in sport, and positive youth development. It is not just about financial support but also about being ambassadors for change, and advocates for safer communities and more focused youth. We believe that together, we can make a significant difference and contribute to the reduction of youth violence in our society,” the Principal Youth Development Officer said.

She told her audience that their collective efforts could bring about lasting change in the lives of the youth and the fabric of communities.  Therefore, she urged them to “stand together in support of this noble cause and work hand-in-hand to create a brighter and more promising future for the generations to come”.

The first phase of the project was funded by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, and ran from September last year to February 2023.  The second phase is in collaboration with the Barbados Boxing Association and the Office of the Attorney General.

The Ohana “Gloves Over Guns” Project is designed to engage the youth in community-based boxing activities.  Through this initiative, they will learn essential life skills that will guide them towards becoming responsible, compassionate, and empowered individuals.

Ms. Titus continued: “We believe that by engaging our young people in constructive and meaningful activities, such as sports, we can steer them away from the path of violence and negativity.”
