Scores of Barbadians availed themselves of the free advice, knowledge and expertise that was on hand at the Barbados Pharmaceutical Society’s Health Fair last Saturday, in Golden Square Freedom Park, The City.

President of the Barbados Pharmaceutical Society, Yolan Pantin, said from all accounts the event, which capped activities for Pharmaceutical Week, was a success. She said most of the visitors to the fair were mainly interested in the health testing (blood pressure and blood sugar) as well as the various vitamins and supplements that were on display.

Ms. Pantin further added that it was important for pharmacists to stay connected with the public.

“Persons seem more willing to engage with us in this type of informal setting. They were more open to asking questions and receiving information and this is important because healthcare should be accessible to everyone,” she said.

The president explained that the role of the pharmacist had evolved over the years from being just a dispenser of medicine to that of counsellor as well, and playing a pivotal role as healthcare provider for patients. “Our patients trust us and we have to ensure that we keep abreast of the changes and improvements in medicines that we can adequately provide the level of care and education that we do for our patients. Their health is our priority,” she stated.
