Calls by Barbados’ youth for a greater involvement in matters relating to climate change and the future of Barbados have been heard.

Minister of the Environment and National Beautification, Green and Blue Economy, Adrian Forde, gave the youth the assurance that Government has heard their call, and called on “every young person” in Barbados to take action against climate change.

“You must be able to ensure climate change ends with you and your generation and not passed onto another generation. That is the fight you must be involved in,” Mr. Forde challenged.

He was speaking during a rally in Golden Square Freedom Park to mark World Children’s Day on Monday, and was joined by Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Kirk Humphrey; Director of the Child Care Board, Roseann Richards; representatives from UNICEF and other child rights activists.

Three students – Tylon Forde, Christopher Paige and Samiyyah Gamble -presented the Minister with the declaration on behalf of the youth of Barbados, signaling their commitment and desire to becoming more involved and having a voice in the fight against climate change.

And, Minister Forde stated the declaration must be seen as an irreversible contract that “cements the partnership between the government and the young people of this country”.

He added that the words of the contract must be realised, understood and appreciated by all, as its words will determine the future of Barbados and the world.

The Minister further noted that there must be a call of action from the young people of Barbados.  “You all must be the active players, the active participants in this change, in this climate fight. It must be every single voice, the call of action to every single young person in Barbados. Your ability to fight this climate crisis will determine Barbados’ ability to survive the test of time,” he stressed.

Mr. Forde warned that the climate crisis impacted generations and lives, and all efforts must be made to ensure that climate change ends with the present generation.

“Every single young person must … honour this declaration. It is a contract which must never be broken. It must have an irreversible connection to you, your family and your children to come. It will determine your future,” he maintained.
