Barbados is increasing its early warning capacity to alert citizens about impending disasters.

To highlight work being done in this area, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), in collaboration with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Office of Policy and Regulatory Reform for Resilience (PROSE), will host a national Multi-Hazard Early Warning System event on Friday, November 1, at the Savannah Beach Hotel, Hastings, Christ Church, from 1:30 p.m.

It will feature the launch of the national MHEWS Policy, and the official instalment of the Cabinet-approved Technical MHEWS Advisory Committee (TMAC) during its inaugural meeting, following the opening ceremony.

At the ceremony, there will also be the presentation of Early Warning System equipment to radio stations that signed memorandums of understanding (MOU) agreements last year and the recognition of those signing MOU agreements with the DEM on the day.

Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams, will deliver the feature address during the opening ceremony, while Director of the DEM, Kerry Hinds, will deliver opening remarks. Chief of Party of PROSE, Marienela Guzman, will also deliver remarks.

International Consultant, Disaster Risk Management and Resilience, Jeremy Collymore, will present and introduce the TMAC members.
