The relationship between Barbados and Cuba remains strong, and there is a willingness for it to become even stronger in a number of key areas.

This was the common theme expressed on Wednesday, as the Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba, Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella, paid a courtesy call on Acting Prime Minister, Santia Bradshaw, at Ilaro Court.

Acting Prime Minister Bradshaw sincerely thanked Cuba for its continued assistance, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and reiterated Barbados and CARICOM’s call for an end to the embargo which continues to be imposed on Cuba.

Ms. Bradshaw also expressed an interest in deepening the two countries’ relationship to help Barbados in the fight against non-communicable diseases, enhance its response to Alzheimer’s and oncological disorders, and also foster greater connections with respect to tourism; biotechnology to facilitate new treatments for diabetes; and the Bridgetown Initiative.

Meanwhile, the Cuban Deputy Prime Minister thanked the Acting Prime Minister and Barbados for their continued support, especially Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley for her calls last week, during the G77 and China Summit in Havana, Cuba, for an end to the embargo.

Mr. Perdomo Di-Lella also expressed a willingness to foster closer relations between the two nations in relation to health services and a number of other key areas.

Also present was Minister of State in Foreign Trade and Business, Sandra Husbands, who spoke to the importance of increasing trade between the two countries.
