Schools across Barbados are celebrating African Awareness Month with a number of activities.
St. Boniface Nursery School, Sion Hill, St. James, will be continuing its look at the African continent with performances and story-telling from guest speaker, Patricia Ramsay, on Friday, February 23, beginning at 9:15 a.m.
Mrs. Ramsay, a Christian missionary who frequently visits various African countries, will tell stories about Africa and share artefacts from these places with the children. Pupils will also learn about the different animals found in Africa when they go on a ‘safari’ during a presentation called Driving Through Africa. There will also be a modelling segment, complete with a red carpet at 1:30 p.m., so children and teachers can show off their African wear.
On Tuesday, February 27, staff and pupils of the Thelma Berry Nursery School, St. David’s, Christ Church, will be treated to a puppet show on African awareness by the officers from the Media Resource Department of the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation. It will start at 9:30 a.m. and both teachers and students will be donning their finest African garb.
Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary School, Pinelands, St. Michael, will be celebrating African heritage on Wednesday, February 28, from 9:30 a.m., by taking a look at Zimbabwe under the theme: Simudzai Mureza Wedu WeZimbabwe, meaning Blessed Be the Land of Zimbabwe. Pupils will make presentations on Zimbabwe during the celebrations.
Over at Bay Primary School, Bayville, St. Michael, students will march through the neighbouring districts in their African wear on Wednesday, February 28, starting at 9:00 a.m. They will be accompanied by ‘Mother Sally’ and a tuk band. There will also be presentations held at the school on Africa.
