Press conference hosted by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley – March 31, 2021. (PMO)

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has announced the opening of bakeries over the Easter weekend.

During a live press conference from Ilaro Court last night, the Prime Minister granted an exemption to bakeries to open on Good Friday, April 2, Easter Sunday, April 4, and Easter bank holiday, Monday April 5, to satisfy the appetites of Barbadians who may want to purchase hot cross buns and other treats over the holiday period.

Ms. Motttley added that Government had received representations about bakeries, in particular, being able to sell over the long weekend, even though the current Emergency Management (COVID-19) (Curfew) (No. 7) Directive states that bakeries will be allowed to open for the purpose of baking bread.

“But we’ve agreed that they should be able to sell. We know that this is a weekend where Barbadians like hot cross buns and all of the different other things and the small things that we can still enjoy. So, I’ve asked the Attorney General to provide an exemption for the bakeries to be able to sell this weekend. Throughout the Fridays…It is really the Bank Holidays and Sundays, because of course, they can sell any other day of the week.
