Barbadians are being encouraged to come out to the National Independence Thanksgiving Service, to be held at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey, St. Michael, on Sunday, November 26, at 10:00 a.m.

The appeal came today from Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Third Sector, Dr. Karen Best, as she addressed a press conference, at the Warrens Office Complex.

Noting that the Ministry bears responsibility for Ecclesiastical Affairs, she expressed the hope that the gymnasium would be filled with persons “to come and witness and be part” of the service. Stating that no tickets will be required to enter the gymnasium, she added: “Once you want to be at the service, you are invited to be at the service.”

The service, in celebration of Barbados’ 57th Anniversary of Independence, is being held under the theme Embracing Our Heritage With Faith and Thanks.

Rector of St. Paul’s Anglican Church and Officiant of the service, Reverend Erma Ambrose, in explaining the significance of the theme, said: “We always have to thank God. Let’s worship together; let us give God thanks for his many blessings as we thank Him for the 57 years and look forward to the future…. The service will be exciting and uplifting.”

Reverend Ambrose pointed out that the focus this year is on youth participation and said there will be representation from various denominations including the Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Jewish community as well as Covenant Life Dance group, the 75 Voices-strong Combined Choir; The Barbados YouthADVANCE Corps and schools across the island.

Prior to the service, there will be some televised congratulatory messages from the various religious and community leaders here and across the diaspora.

The multi-faith service, which is expected to last for an hour and a half, will be attended by Her Excellency The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason. It will also be available virtually for Barbadians here and in the diaspora to follow and participate.

Additionally, those attending can expect a musical medley by The Band of the Barbados Police Service; the recital of the National Pledge by a student of The Irving Wilson School; the presentation of the National Flag of Barbados by The Barbados Boy Scouts Association and intercessory prayers by The Prince’s Trust International Team Programme.

While Reverend Ambrose will be the officiant, Bishop Dr. Kenroy Burke, Administrative Bishop, New Testament Church of God will deliver the sermon.

Persons attending the service will be assisted in the parking of their vehicles at designated areas. They are expected to be seated in the gymnasium by 9:15 a.m.
