Government is committed to building on the cordial ties with Argentina, which were established since August 16, 1968.
Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw assured Argentina’s Ambassador Ciro Ciliberto, of this on Wednesday during a courtesy call at Ilaro Court, where the two held wide-ranging talks.
Ms. Bradshaw told the Ambassador that his predecessor Ambassador Gustavo Martinez Pandiani, was instrumental in establishing excellent ties with government ministers and the wider government and had identified areas of cooperation that would benefit both countries.
Singling out cultural exchanges as an example, the Acting Prime Minister said the foundation had already been laid in this area and the exposure to Argentina’s culture had allowed Barbadians to have a deeper appreciation of the South American country and its mores.
“So I do feel that, that has opened up the opportunity for us to be able to build on. I think that we can continue certainly, to deepen those cultural exchanges,” she stated.
Ms. Bradshaw also discussed cooperation in sports, and working with Argentina’s sporting organisations to assist parents in developing the sporting talents of their children.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Ciliberto said the visit by President of Argentina, Dr. Alberto Fernández in February was a demonstration of the country’s commitment to strengthening the relationship.
“I will be working to continue building diplomatic relations with Barbados. We have been working on several activities of mutual benefit to both countries and Argentina can provide assistance. We also benefit. We are always happy to share our knowledge and personal experiences with Barbados,” he stated.
The two officials also discussed climate change and its effects on vulnerable countries; collaborating with Argentina’s scientists to tackle sargassum seaweed; student exchanges; opportunities for further training in Spanish to equip the workforce for job opportunities abroad; conclusion of an air services agreement and techniques for improving food security, among other areas.
