Child Sexual Abuse is the theme of this year’s Essay and Poster Competitions being sponsored by the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) and the United Nations’ Children Fund (UNICEF), Eastern Caribbean Office.

Both competitions start this Monday, September 17, and are open to students between the ages of seven and 16 years.

The essay competition targets two categories of secondary school students – First to Third Formers, and Fourth and Fifth Formers.?? The poster competition, on the other hand, is designed for primary school students in Classes One and Two, and Classes Three and Four.??

The topic for both competitions is Child Sexual Abuse through My Eyes: How Do I Protect Myself? It is expected that through participation, children and adolescents would deepen their knowledge of child sexual abuse and understand its manifestations.?? It is also hoped that participants would be better equipped to protect themselves from such abuse and learn of the support services available to survivors.

The competitions also aim to provide avenues for children and adolescents to express themselves on issues that may be confronting them and to raise public awareness on the impact of child sexual abuse.

Each competition will run from September 17 to October 26, with judging scheduled to take place from October 29 to November 9.??

Prizes will be awarded on Friday, November 16, at a ceremony at the United Nations (UN) House, Marine Gardens, Christ Church.

The BGIS/UNICEF Essay and Poster Competitions were initiated last year as the country marked the 21st anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.??
