The link between responsible business?? and sustainability will be brought to the fore?? beginning?? next?? week,?? when the Barbados Institute of Environmental Professionals hosts a?? seminar series,?? in collaboration with the?? Ministry of the Environment.
Organised to mark Environment Month, it seeks to raise awareness of various sound business practices and responsible consumerism, all towards achieving a green economy. The lectures will be held every Wednesday from June 9 – 30, at the Barbados Museum Courtyard, beginning at 7:00 p.m. each night, under the theme "Living Sustainably…Responsible Business…Responsible Consumers."
"Hazards in Paradise, Living with Risks" is the topic for the first lecture, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 9. The main speaker will be Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Jeremy Collymore, and the other panelists are Structural Engineer, Grenville Phillips and Risk Management Specialist, Martin Goddard.
The second lecture scheduled to be held on Wednesday, June 16, will address the topic: "Responding to the ???Green’ Movement – The Consumers’ View." The featured speaker will be President of the Barbados Consumer Research Organisation, Malcolm Taitt. Panelists for the evening are General Secretary of Barbados Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (BANGO), Roosevelt King, President of the Barbados Association of Retired Professionals (BARP), Ernest Batson and Acting Director of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Jeffrey Kellman.
On Wednesday, June 23, "Responding to the ???Green’ Movement – A Business Perspective" will be the seminar’s focus. Minister of the Environment, Dr. Denis Lowe is expected to welcome a representative from Marks & Spencer, a major British retailer with over 895 stores in more than 40 territories around the world, as the evening’s featured speaker. The evening’s panel will include Managing Director of SuperCentre Limited, David Neilands, Environmentalist, Loretta Duffy-Mayers and Farmer, Keely Holder.
The final lecture in the series will take place the following Wednesday, June 30. The topic for that occasion will be "Coastal Pollution: Impacts and Responsibilities of the Tourism Sector". Executive Director of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, Sue Springer, will be the main speaker for the evening.
The panel on that occasion will comprise Director of the Coastal Zone Management Unit, Dr. Leo Brewster, Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Department, Anthony Headley and Marine Biologist and Entrepreneur, Andre Miller.
