The Barbados Port Inc. (BPI) has plans to develop a boat haul-out facility along the Mighty Grynner Highway.

This was disclosed by Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill, during the reopening of the Millie Ifill Fish Market facility at Weston, St. James, on Saturday, September 21.

Mr. Gooding-Edghill, under whose portfolio the BPI falls, indicated that in line with the strategic vision of Government, the BPI continues to invest in infrastructure upgrades to support the maritime sector.  As a result, work is ongoing to develop a boat haul-out facility.

“This proposed facility, located along the Mighty Grynner Highway, will offer marine maintenance and repair services to the Barbados, regional, and international boating communities.  The project was tendered as a concession and awarded to a private entity.

“A planning application has been submitted and is currently being evaluated by the relevant agencies.  BPI has also requested that the facility be operated under a regime where boat owners will benefit from tax concessions on selected parts and equipment,” the Minister shared.

He noted that while construction continues at the Shallow Draft Marina, in the interim, a temporary boat lift-out facility has been provided with boat storage at a site adjacent to BICO on Prescod Boulevard. This site also provides a space for the repair and maintenance of vessels.

Mr. Gooding-Edghill also disclosed that the Port had ordered one boat lift and a marine hydraulic trailer at a combined cost of approximately BDS $1 million, which are to be installed at the boat lift facility, to replace the existing 40-year-old equipment.

The Minister stated that while BPI’s primary business focuses on cargo and cruise operations, he was pleased to see its commitment to social responsibility.

“I am pleased to note that the Barbados Port Inc. is committed to being a positive contributor to the community, a promise manifested through service, philanthropy, and the elevation of sustainability at the core of its business,” he said.
