Two organisations are set to receive charitable donations from the Embassy of Barbados in Washington D.C, the United States (US) offices of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) and the Barbados Association of Washington D.C. Inc. (BAWDC), next week.

They are the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF) which will be presented with the funds on Monday, January 15, in a brief ceremony at The Crane Resort in St. Philip. The event gets underway at 10:00 a.m.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, who attended the overseas gala, will be present at the ceremony. Ambassador of Barbados to the United States, Selwin Hart, Director (USA) BTMI, Petra Roach, and President of the BAWDC, David Thompson, will present cheques in the amount of BDS$10,000 towards CDEMA’s hurricane relief efforts and CSF’s Student Program for Innovation in Science and Engineering (SPISE).

The donations follow the successful staging of the inaugural Spirit of Barbados Gala held on November 11, 2017, in Washington D.C., as the flagship commemoration of Barbados’ Independence Day in the US capital.

It attracted a sold-out audience that comprised members of the diplomatic corps, US congressional representatives, and leaders in business, academia and the media. Barbadian artistes Edwin Yearwood and Leadpipe & Sadis headlined the gala that included award-winning Barbadian chefs and mixologists.

The Spirit of Barbados Gala is expected to be an annual fundraiser to support social initiatives in Barbados and the Caribbean.
