The Barbados Criminal Justice System – 50 Years and Beyond will be the focus of the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit’s (CJRPU) activities to mark Crime Awareness Month from Saturday, October 1, to Monday, October 31.
The activities, which are designed to highlight changes within the island’s criminal justice system over the last 50 years, will commence with a church service on Sunday, October 9, at the Mount Zion Church in Rock Dundo, St. James, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Then on Friday, October 14, the Unit will host a career showcase for secondary school students to educate them about the types of careers within the criminal justice system. That showcase will be held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, from 10:00 a.m.
On Wednesday, October 19, members of the public are invited to a lecture entitled: Punishment in the Criminal Justice System in Barbados from Then till Now, at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael, beginning at 7:00 p.m. It will be delivered by Senior Research Officer at the CJRPU and Criminologist, Kim Ramsay.
This will be followed by a panel discussion on the topic: Building a More Efficient Criminal Justice System, on Tuesday, October 25, at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael, also at 7:00 p.m.
Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite, will deliver brief remarks. Panellists will include Director of the Forensic Sciences Centre, Cheryl Corbin; Roseann Grace of the Probation Department; Assistant Chief Officer at HMP Dodds, Anthony Holder; Case Manager at HMP Dodds, Lena Weekes-Phillips; and representatives from the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Supreme Court.
All are invited.
