Programmes for the elderly and the disabled which exist in Cuba could be beneficial to the development of similar initiatives in Barbados.

This was underscored by Cuban Ambassador, Lissette Per??z Per??z, during a meeting with Minister of Social Care, Steve Blackett, at his Ministry’s office in Warrens Office Complex, yesterday.

The Ambassador noted that the elderly were an important aspect of the Cuban society, as her country also had an increasingly ageing population. She mentioned a university for the elderly, and recreational programmes, as initiatives which Cuba had implemented to integrate the elderly into society.

Regarding Persons with Disabilities, the Cuban Ambassador stated that in order to make them feel useful in society, areas such as education, culture and employment should be addressed when policies were being made for this sector.

She said that Cuba had promoted culture among young Persons with Disabilities, and as a result, several persons emerged with different artistic skills.

Meanwhile, Minister Blackett, welcomed the opportunity to gain from Cuba’s experiences with these two vulnerable groups.
