As countries around the world observe International Day of the Disabled, today, December 3, the National Disabilities Unit has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that Barbados becomes a more inclusive society for persons with disabilities.
Today also marks the 23rd anniversary of the National Disabilities Unit, which is mandated to promote the rights, and address the needs and concerns of persons with disabilities. It falls under the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs.
In a statement issued in recognition of today, the Unit noted that the journey towards a society that is inclusive and equitable, has been “wrought with challenges and successes”. However, it expressed optimism that with continued advocacy, this would become a reality.
The National Disabilities Unit also commended those umbrella bodies and affiliates which have worked with them over the years, noting that collaboration was key to ensuring that persons with disabilities are mobilised, embraced and empowered.
