Interested Barbadians are invited to submit entries for the Celebrating the Legacy of Shirley Chisholm Arts Competition, which is being held by the Division of Culture Prime Minister’s Office in collaboration with the National Library Service (NLS), in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of Ms. Chisholm’s birth.

Persons may submit entries in any art form, such as dance, music, poetry, essay, fine art, or any other format that best represents the theme of the competition, which is Celebrating the Contribution of Shirley Chisholm to the Political and Social Development of the United States of America.

All submissions must be in jpeg, mp4, or pdf formats with names and email addresses included, and sent to honourchisholm@nls.gov.bb by Thursday, October 31.

The winner will receive an all-inclusive trip to New York, United States of America, while prizes will be awarded for second and third place finalists.

Ms. Chisholm, an African American with Barbadian roots, was born on November 30, 1924. She was the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress and was the first African American woman to seek the Democratic Presidential Nomination in 1972.
