The Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has prepared a number of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for livestock farmers and animal owners seeking answers on the impact of volcanic ash.
They were developed following the ash fall on Barbados, caused by the eruption of La Soufriere Volcano in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and concerns expressed by farmers and citizens.
Answers to 12 of the most important questions are included. Among these are: What are some of the risks to livestock? How would farmers access feed/hay during this period? and When water becomes contaminated, what should be done?
The document also indicates to farmers/owners what actions can be taken when ash fall events occur and directs them to the Barbados Agricultural Society and the Veterinary Services, for further assistance.
