Five fire officers who were promoted to the rank of Station Officer, were encouraged to avoid being a “boss”, and endeavour to be a visionary leader for those they serve.

Chief Fire Officer, Errol Maynard, gave this advice to acting Station Officers Wayne Vaughan, Fernando McAllister, Roger Bourne, Elridge Straker, and Fire Officer, Damian Bayne, as they received their official instruments elevating them to the rank of Station Officer.

Speaking during a brief ceremony at the Barbados Fire Service headquarters, on Monday, Mr. Maynard told those promoted that they were being rewarded for work done, while also being given the opportunity to work at a higher level in the future.

“Celebrate your success. You deserve it, but remember, this…is a journey. Therefore, I admonish you to continue working hard. Those who may be slipping, take fresh guard and work towards the next hurdle, the next milestone. Set high standards for yourselves and your subordinates,” he said.

Mr. Maynard told those receiving their appointments that they needed others in order to be successful leaders. He encouraged them to work with their charges, respect them and treat them with dignity, while still being firm, fair and friendly.

“The higher you are elevated, the more of a servant you are. Be the people’s servant,” he said. Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Mr. Vaughan said he was living proof that hard work paid off.
