A flood watch has been issued for Barbados and will remain in effect until noon, tomorrow, Saturday, August 18.
The flood watch was issued by the Barbados Meteorological Service today, Friday, August 17, at noon. Residents in flood-prone areas are therefore urged to take all necessary precautions.
Acting Director of the Meteorological Office, Sonia Nurse, explained that a flood watch means that conditions are favourable, and there is the possibility of flooding within the watch area within the next 12 to 24 hours.
This comes as an approaching tropical wave affected the island last night and early today with cloudy skies and scattered showers.
Ms. Nurse noted that while shower activity diminished as the morning progressed, the latest satellite and radar imagery indicated the potential for some outbreaks of moderate to heavy showers during this afternoon and into tonight.
She added that further analysis suggested that the wave would continue to affect the island into tomorrow, Saturday, August 18.
As a result of the rainfall activity experienced across some sections of the island over the last few days, the Acting Director explained that any additional rainfall was likely to result in some localised flooding. She also warned that the watch may be upgraded to a warning, if conditions warranted.
