Former student of the Frederick Smith Secondary School, Rosalind Hinds, is the winner of the Errol Barrow Scholarship for 2024.
The 30-year-old chef, who is currently employed at the Sandy Lane Hotel, expressed her shock, excitement, and pride when she realised that she was the 2024 recipient.
“I felt very overwhelmed, happy, every kind [of] feeling. I felt gracious, thankful, because seeing a person like me who had attended the Frederick Smith Secondary School, we are not people who are usually highlighted for these kinds of things. You usually hear about Harrison College, Queen’s College, The St. Michael School, so I felt very proud to see that someone like me, that went to Frederick Smith Secondary School, was able to win the scholarship,” Ms. Hinds said.
The scholarship winner credited her father for not only encouraging her to apply for the scholarship, but as the one who noticed the ad on Facebook and forwarded it to her.
Ms. Hinds, who expressed a desire to study for a long time but could not due to financial constraints, will now pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Culinary Management at George Brown College in Toronto, Canada.
The Errol Barrow Scholarship is offered to students from secondary schools established after 1951, who are pursuing tertiary studies in culinary, marine, or the aeronautics fields.
