A free park and ride service will be in operation for the Rock Hall Heritage and International Fair, which will be held tomorrow, Saturday, June 17, at the Freedom Village, St. Thomas, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The shuttle service will be offered from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m., from the St. Thomas Parish Church. Alternatively, persons may visit the Transport Board’s website for the ABC Highway Speightstown Terminal to Oistins Bus Schedule .
Persons are also reminded that during the day, there will be limited parking along Fire Hill Road, and at the old St. Thomas Outpatients’ Clinic. No parking will be allowed on the site.
Individuals attending the fair, organised by the Division of Culture in the Prime Minister’s Office, will be exposed to the rich diversity of Barbados’ cultural heritage through many activities, including displays of traditional cultural practices, such as woodcarvings and Landship manoeuvers.
There will also be talks on bush/heritage medicines; opportunities for genealogy tracing; and the selling of books on Barbadian history and culture. Additionally, displays of local art and craft, and an afro fashion market will be presented.
A highlight of the fair will be the Remember When Corner for the older generation, which is sponsored by the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs.
In this space, the elderly will be interviewed and their stories of growing up in Barbados recorded and used as tools for teaching the youth about the island in bygone days, and the importance of preserving the country’s cultural heritage. In addition, oral stories of Barbadian communities and an exhibition of artefacts will also be on display.
The National Library Service (NLS) will host a Children’s Corner, with traditional Bajan games, paintings, oral stories, puppets and other activities. Activities for Heritage Month, will end on Friday, June 30.
