In its steadfast commitment to maintaining global standards of aviation safety and security, Grantley Adams International Airport Inc. (GAIA Inc.) announces its upcoming Full-Scale Exercise (FTX). This vital exercise is a deliberate step to ensure GAIA Inc. fully aligns with international regulatory requirements.
The 2019 unforeseen impact of volcanic ash on Barbados, resulting from the eruption of La Soufriere in St. Vincent, unintentionally met the regulatory full-scale exercise criteria. This upcoming FTX will be the first deliberate exercise following that unexpected event, furthering the airport’s dedication to emergency preparedness.
With the active support of the Department of Emergency Management, the exercise will be conducted on an undisclosed date in October. The date is undisclosed to protect the integrity of the exercise.
Beyond the practical assessment and enhancement of emergency protocols within a 5-mile radius of the aerodrome and Oistins Bay, this exercise is paramount in reiterating GAIA Inc.’s compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s requirements as well as all appropriate regulations observed nationally and internationally.
The Barbados Defence Force will provide simulated victims, and together with the Barbados Defence Force Field Medical Team (BDF FMT) they will be instrumental in achieving a thorough assessment.
Residents are assured of limited disruption and are advised that they will not be directly involved. All national emergency services are poised to participate. Should an authentic emergency occur simultaneously, the exercise will be promptly halted.
Any communications about genuine emergencies will be prominently marked with “NO DUFF – this is not a drill”.
