The Grantley Adams Memorial School will be opening its salon to the public one Saturday in every month during this academic year 2022 – 2023.

The salon, which is run by the students in the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) programme, will begin the community outreach for the first time tomorrow, Saturday November 19, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

It will target persons in St. Joseph, St. John and the surrounding areas and will see CVQ Cosmetology students providing manicures, pedicures and natural hairstyles to patrons.

Acting CVQ Coordinator, Karen Elliott, giving the rationale behind the move, said: “The school is reaching out to its community in order to give the students an opportunity to practise their craft and hone their skills while creating an entrepreneurial strategy.”

Adding that this year would be the first in which the students will be assessed in the Level 1 Cosmetology Standard, Ms. Elliott expressed the hope that not only this cohort but others would see the importance of the vocational subject areas.

“We want this acceptance of CVQs, not only in the area of cosmetology, but in general. We want them to see how they can use these skills for their future livelihoods, become entrepreneurs in their chosen careers and continue to hone these and other skills,” she explained.

The coordinator, who anticipates that the community will respond favourably, revealed that as the need arises the school will look to have the salon open two Saturdays in each month, instead of once a month.
