Sports Minister, Stephen Lashley (l) and Education Minister, Ronald Jones (r) meeting with??officials??from the Physical Education Teachers Association of Barbados earlier this week at the Elsie Payne Complex (BGIS).

Primary school athletes will be racing to cross the finish line when the National Primary School’s Athletic Championship (NAPSAC) commences in May.

This was confirmed yesterday, Wednesday, March 27, by Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, who is also the Acting Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation.??

The announcement was made after Minister Lashley met with NAPSAC officials, representatives from the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Education at his Ministry’s headquarters in Haggatt Hall.

He stated, "It is critically important that an early platform is provided for the nation’s young athletes."?? The annual track meet was adversely affected due to the unavailability of the National Stadium’s track, which is undergoing construction.

Stressing that his Ministry was committed to ensuring that the track "is completed and meets the highest possible international standards", the Sports Minister disclosed that NAPSAC would take place at Kensington Oval.??

He outlined that the five zone meets were slated for May 8, 9, 10, 13 and 14, while the semi-finals would be on May 21 and the finals on May 31.

"The finals will be held provisionally at Kensington Oval, but we have agreed that once the National Stadium is available, then the NAPSAC finals would be held there," he revealed.

Mrs. Lashley added, "I am very pleased that we could come to a decision in circumstances where we know there is a challenge… I want to commend all the parties involved for very frankly discussing this very important issue and allowing us to come to the point of having firm dates and a firm resolution to ensure that our young athletes, who every year look forward to a NAPSAC meet, are not disappointed."
