Over 150 senior government officials, stakeholders and representatives of private sector and non-governmental organisations will get an opportunity to hear about and offer feedback on the proposed polices set out in the draft amended Physical Development Plan (PDP).
The Town and Country Development Planning Office will be launching its community meetings on the amendment to the PDP this Friday, February 24, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is expected to deliver the feature address, while Chief Town Planner, Mark Cummins; and Chairman of the NCD Commission, Sir Trevor Hassell, will give remarks. A comprehensive overview of the PDP will be given and discussion will follow.
The PDP sets out a settlement and growth pattern for Barbados’ orderly and progressive development. Since the first PDP of the 1970’s, this current exercise represents the third amendment and comes at a critical time in the country’s development, when resiliency and adaptation to climate change have become necessities.
Chief Town Planner, Mark Cummins, has expressed the view that this document provides the foundation for the future sustainable development of Barbados.
“The amended PDP is intended to create a nation in which resilient, sustainable economic and physical growth are balanced with conservation and restoration of irreplaceable resources, rural working landscapes, cultural heritage and natural heritage all woven together in a green economy,” Mr. Cummins stated.
Six community meetings will be held across the island during February and March to give members of the public an opportunity to make valuable input into the draft plan. The first meeting will be held on Saturday, February 25, at the Princess Margaret School, Six Roads, St. Philip, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
