The public will have an opportunity to see how staff of the Barbados Meteorological Services (MET Office) forecast weather events, and learn more about its operations during an Open Day on Thursday, March 23, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Persons will be able to view the various aspects of the daily operations of the MET Office, including different areas of forecasting, when they visit its offices in the Barbados Civil Aviation Department (BCAD) building, at Charnocks, Christ Church.
Students of selected public and private primary and secondary schools are invited to view the showcase between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
During the day, visitors to the office will get a greater insight into a number of areas, including how impact based forecasting is conducted; view the 3DPAWS and water level sensors; learn about climate and climate change, weather patterns, watches and warnings, as well as tsunamis and earthquakes.
The MET Office will be joined by representatives from other institutions, such as the Barbados Water Authority and BCAD.
This is being done to mark World Meteorological Day; the World Meteorological Organization’s 150th Anniversary, and the Caribbean Meteorological Organization’s 50th Anniversary.
The Open Day also coincides with the Caribe Wave exercise, which will be held on the same date, and seeks to ensure that persons are equipped with the knowledge base to adequately respond during a tsunami and earthquake.
World Meteorological Day is being celebrated under the theme The Future of Weather, Climate and Water Across Generations.
