Barbados has now surpassed the half million mark in Government’s tree planting initiative.
Acting Minister of Environment and National Beautification, Blue and Green Economy, Corey Lane, made the disclosure during a recent tree planting ceremony, at the National Botanical Gardens, Codrington, St. Michael.
The occasion commemorated the 45th anniversary of the Barbados chapter of the International Association of Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widows (IAMWMW).
During the ceremony, Mr. Lane joined with members of the IAMWMW in the planting of a golden apple tree and a guava tree. “We are now at 579,002 trees, as we head towards 600,000, with the mission of planting 1,000,000 trees in the near future,” he shared.
The acting Minister highlighted the importance of tree planting in adding to the beauty of our country. He indicated that new trees “assist with biodiversity, add to our ability to handle carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and also add to food security”.
Mr. Lane also saluted the workers of the National Botanical Gardens, for transforming the location into a “national treasure” and “premier recreation site”.
