As the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) moves ahead with more upgrades under Phase Three of the Expansion Programme for the Accident and Emergency Department (AED), there will be minor disruptions to some of its services in the coming days.
The Engineering Department will be conducting preparatory work from tomorrow, Friday, August 11, for a major electrical upgrade on Sunday, August 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
As a result of the move to improve the electrical supply to AED, a number of departments will be affected by a temporary shutdown of the main electrical supply. These include the:
- AED lower level – The department will be without A/C for about 15 to 20 minutes as engineers conduct electrical upgrades.
- Cardiac Suite – No patients will be housed there after the evening of Saturday, August 12, until scheduled work is completed.
- Cath Lab – No procedures will be conducted in the Cath Lab after the evening of Saturday, August 12, until work is completed.
- Cardiac Theatre – To remain out of use after Saturday, August 12, until work is completed.
- Ophthalmology – to remain unused for the period of the shutdown – this area will have no A/C.
- Antenatal – Will experience power outage (twice – at the beginning and the end) when the supply is being transferred and on return to normal (15 to 20 minutes).
- Ward B1 – Patients to be housed in the A/C rooms as the generator will be connected directly below – there will be noise and exhaust fumes.
In addition, there will be vehicular and pedestrian traffic diversions in and around AED from Friday, August 11, to Sunday, August 13. Security will be on hand to advise staff, patients, and visitors, as they enter the premises.
The management of the QEH apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks members of the public for their understanding, as it aims to enhance the services in the Accident and Emergency Department.
