Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams, believes that there is no longer such a thing as normal when it comes to climate change, and it is likely that Barbados will experience a category five hurricane.
Mr. Abrahams expressed this view at the Disaster Recovery and Resilience Business Forum, held recently at Sandals Royal Barbados Resort, Maxwell, Christ Church.
He said: “The word normal does not exist now in our contemplation. Once upon a time, it was rare to get a category five storm. We get category five storms every hurricane season – and more and more of them – and eventually, one is going to hit Barbados. Do not be fooled.”
The Minister told the forum of business leaders that communication is integral in the effective implementation of disaster risk management.
Mr. Abrahams stressed: “We need to know what you’re doing. You need to know what we’re doing, and you need to know what each other is doing, so we don’t duplicate efforts. We make the best use of our resources, and we come up with the most cohesive, comprehensive national plan that we can.”
